Using Art to Stop the Crackdown on LGBTQ+ Rights. An Interview with Georgian Artist, Eteri Chkadua

A dear longtime friend of mine, Eteri Chkadua sent me the news last week about how her home country Georgia is moving forward with bills that outlaw Pride events and Trans people. This should be a clarion call for everyone in the United States considering the Republican Christian Nationalist agenda and our compromised Supreme Court working with The Heritage Foundation. Read Project 2025 while you're at it. Then I read How Georgia is on the Front Line of the Struggle between Russia and the West in The Guardian and the billionaire hiding behind Georgia's ruling party.

Eteri, a renowned Georgian artist was gracious to accept my plea for an interview. She's been a vocal opponent of the crackdown on LQBTQ+ rights and a champion of human rights for decades. "In 2015 in collaboration with Identoba and Europe House to produce the exhibit Anonymous, 'Story of an Anonymous Gay' presented the invisible aspects of the lives of the LGBTQ+ community by sharing their stories. The exhibition brought up the issues of discrimination, invisibility, and the high levels of homophobia." After the exhibit, she had opportunities to defend the LGBTQ+ community and confront the views of straight people and priests on Georgian television and radio shows.

And she is back to defend human rights, once again!

1. What came to mind when you learned of the recent events in the parliament signing bills that would outlaw LQBTQ+ identity? Can you give us a brief history of when this began?

It was not a big surprise to me as I have been very disappointed with the current government ruled by the Georgian Dream Party since its arrival in 2012. The government has been established by the Made in Russia Georgian oligarch who is kissing the a#@ of the psychopath monster Putin by bringing these degenerative laws to Georgia. In the 1970s mostly well-known in the West and born in Georgia, the great filmmaker, Sergei Parajanov (The Color of Pomegranates, among other films) was arrested for five years in Kyiv, Ukraine for homosexuality. I had friends in the Academy of Arts in the 1980s who'd never admit they were gay because they were too scared of being brutally beaten by their macho neighbors and countrymen.

2. Who is currently in parliament and how did they become powerful?

A Georgian oligarch has put in parliament his own a#@-kissers who'd do anything he demands for money, they are mediocre people, treacherous to the Georgian people and the country's future. It's embarrassing to have such people governing my native country and elections are faked, of course.

3. What does the ruling party consider LGBTQ propaganda?

During the USSR it was believed that Europe and the West were Gay-if-ing men, otherwise, no one would be gay in Georgia or the USSR. So, the Kremlin and its Georgian a#@-kissing government just continued the Soviet propaganda.

4. What was the Rose Revolution in 2003? Were you in Georgia at that time?

Georgia enjoyed progress in human and LQBTQ rights following the Rose Revolution in 2003. The demonstrators, led by Michael Saakashvili stormed the parliament with roses in their hands, which resulted in the resignation of Eduard Shevardnadze, the president at that time. This event played a strong role as a majority of Georgian citizens supported a pro-western turn and integration into the European Union. The same year Mr. Saakashvili became president. Under his rule, the country was pulled out of the swamp, and anarchy ceased with the deconstruction of the Soviet Union. I was not living in Georgia at that time.

By the way, Mr. Saakashvili is in jail, imprisoned by the current government for no particular reason aside from being afraid his party will win elections.

5. Who does the Georgian government consider foreign agents?

The introduction of anti-LGBTQ legislation followed the Georgian deputy's passage of a Russian-inspired law against Western NGOs, which is aimed at expelling human rights and other groups that help older people and the education of children living in rural regions. The law is supported by the Orthodox Church by using the "Protection of Family Values and Minors" which is copied from Russia's anti-LGBTQ propaganda law passed last year. The bill is scheduled for a second and third reading in the fall.

6.  There's a history of violent mobs aimed at shutting down Pride marches in Tbilisi, can you speak to that? How did the general public react?

The first time on May 17th, 2013 when very few activists walked peacefully in Tbilisi to defend LGBTQ rights, priests came out of churches and started beating them up with chairs and crosses. The police were not prepared to defend the demonstrators on this matter and the patriarch Ilia II called on the authorities to ban the LGBTQ rights event. Since then, it has continued discrimination of rights and gay pride events.

7. Do you feel most people in Georgia are allied with the LGBTQ community? Or are they sliding into the far-right influence?

I couldn't tell what percentage of the population, but like everywhere, educated Georgians are for sure siding with the rights of LGBTQ. They understand that the only way to be a part of Europe is to protect the rights of every human being and their sexual freedom. However, some of the population is clinging to its ancient traditions, to me, it's proof of a lack of education. Georgia's version of Putin's "LGBTQ propaganda" seems designed not only to roll back progress on LGBTQ+ rights but to kill any hope of Georgia entering the European Union which has strict requirements for upholding civil liberties and personal freedoms.

8. How do you see yourself getting involved when you return to Georgia? I know you're ready to fight for human rights. What do you suggest people here in the United States do to help Georgia and keep the far-right extremists from taking over? History has shown that when religious extremists take over (fascism) we all lose our human rights, no matter who we are.

I am an artist, so I often use my arts visual language as my weapon to influence people's minds. For years I've been an LGBTQ rights activist. When I arrived in Georgia I started making simple but sharp points in my radio interviews. My aim was to challenge the basic understanding of uneducated people. I spoke primitively: Why are Georgians so afraid of gays? It's not a virus, it won't jump on to you or your children and will not turn you or them gay. In my talks, I associated the facts of hardcore drug use and alcohol which up to now has taken the lives of so many young Georgians, a reason for their compulsive addictions, the possibility of being gay and unable to come out of the closet, using vast amounts of drugs and alcohol to block their natural sexual desires they were prohibited to admitting.

I was approached by the LGBTQ organization (supported by European NGOs and invited to their hidden office. During the meeting, I offered to stage an exhibition to open up a conversation about their discrimination and rights. I asked them to write to me about what happened the first time they shared that they were gay. I printed these heartbreaking stories in large letters on canvas and graphic designs in the background, making them look more like a piece of art, and hung them as paintings on the walls of the Europa House space located in the center of the Tbilisi capital.

As I imagined, these firsthand, straightforward narrations, used without the author's names (for their safety) had a huge effect on the viewers. They thought they were there to see an exhibition of my paintings, for which I am well-known, and they were unexpectantly stuck reading those texts, unable to avoid the large letters and the stories they never wanted to hear. The exhibition was reviewed on TV and radio, where I addressed and ridiculed the narrow-mindedness of priests and other citizens, so that I may bring a dialogue to defend the privacy and sexual freedom of any individual.

I always use the United States as an example of democracy and free speech, which will continue no matter what far-right extremists preach. The current US government is on the side of the Georgian people who are demonstrating non-stop in opposition to the Georgian government's installment of the so-called Russian Laws. Education is the main power for the development of human minds. As much as I understand some people's need for religion. I wish there was as much attention dedicated in the education systems to the fact that religions were invented by men many centuries ago, and at a time when there were no condoms or technologies for abortion available and I believe religions were useful and necessary for people to unite around common values. But religions are just too ancient to be useful in the modern day. I prefer to remind people about the atrocities, cruelties, and wars resulting between different religious believers just because of their choices in choosing different Gods--who are always depicted as men with long beards--because there were no razors to shave when they were invented.

9. Yes, to all of that yes. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Peace is in danger these days and if those long-bearded gods want to prove that I am wrong and they exist, let them stop the wars, religious fanatics, and far-right extremists everywhere in the world.

Thank you Eteri for participating in this important conversation we should all be having. Your courage and creative ingenuity are inspiring. The world must stand together to protect our brothers and sisters and stop the spread of war and discrimination.

Writing Management, a Year After Covid-19

It's been a while since I've posted on my blog. It's been a hectic year for most of us, a year of loss, heartbreak, and fear. A descent into the unknown.

Having faith was difficult. Faith that I'd return to my regular writing schedule. I have not, nor do I expect to return to my pre-covid routine. It's been difficult to find a space in time for myself.

Alone.

My husband and I live in New York City and share a small apartment with our two young adults ( a large dog and a cat), and both were frustrated and disheartened with the lockdown aka "Pause' in which Governor Cuomo termed. Alas, the end of the tunnel is in view.

I've been unable to find uninterrupted time due to our small business, a jazz club (you can read my previous post ) housed in a historic venue. After lockdown, we improvised and became an outdoor coffee house/cafe. Fresh-squeezed juices. Chagachinos. Local coffee. Pastries from Grandaisy in Tribeca. Our nightclub always had a piston coffee machine, even before Starbucks. My husband spoiled me with his machines and dark roast.

Our sons helped at the cafe (no longer miserable), they learned new skills as baristas. My BFF was happy to join in and likened running a cafe to a housewife on steroids. I thought it was the perfect analogy. After seven days a week for much too long, before extra help arrived, I couldn't focus on writing, not knowing what would happen to our business and my hours were all over the place. I was making food for the cafe when I left. Homework. Meanwhile, my mind was reeling, plotting how to return to the new normal.

I decided on a simple book edit. Not a revision, but an edit. This I figured was all my time allowed, without the stress of wanting to do more. Because apparently, I'm often unsatisfied with the writing work I've managed in a day. It's never enough. (It's hundreds of pages! Let's go!" my inner taskmaster says.) And this was when I had five hours of daily writing time.

I was also waiting to hear back about an R-n-R.

Back in November 2019, I sent in my second Revise and Resubmit to the requesting agent and she warned me it would be a long time, she was slow. I already knew this having finished R-n-R #1 for this agent. She seemed great and I agreed, (at the time) with her suggestions. The historical fantasy had already been revised from its first draft that was omniscient, then third limited past tense, with two POVs, and then 1 POV present, but I've lost track.

I edited another manuscript (not ready to tackle the big revision of the latest draft completed on March 1, 2020.) I queried literary agents. Not one bite after ten sends. I decided to hold that project. I had a realization reading a previous comment from another agent who read the third POV version. She didn't care for the other POV character but she liked the MC's voice and loved the premise. So after three or so years, I realized she was RIGHT and I began revising the historical fantasy back to 3rd POV, past-tense and I cut the other POV character's scenes. But since it's a bit of a whodunnit (genre-mashup, really) I left the chapter scenes in third-objective POV.

And Yesterday I finished! The manuscript is back where I want it. Just a few more tweaks and it's ready to query. (Again!) I reached out to the agent, still "reading" my second R-n-R, and told her I was returning the manuscript to my original design, and while she finally passed, she thought my idea was wise. That was encouraging.

I'm starting to carve out time for writing at other times of the day, restructuring and organizing. I'm not there yet. For years I was an early morning writer and I prefer this. Going from dreaming to writing. Ah, bliss.

Now with our outdoor cafe that's usually a jazz club, moving indoors soon (after construction), my schedule will be in flux once again. I may manage better if I keep flexibility in mind.

And YES, absolutely-- I am VAXXED. Our entire team is. Otherwise, we wouldn't open indoors.

I Love my Brothers and Sisters! and I stand by them.

I woke up today to destruction where I live and where my family's small business, a jazz club, is struggling to survive and I marched on Saturday with Black Lives Matter!

I went jogging after work and was swept up into the march.

Climate Strike. We're All in This Together!

"LISTEN TO THE SCIENTISTS!"  ~ Greta Thunberg.

I've been an environmental activist since the days I hoarded glass bottles under the sink in my Williamsburg apartment in 1989-90s, to the chagrin of my roommate who constantly teased me about my "collection" of bottles.

But I couldn't throw them in the garbage! and no one was even talking about recycling in New York City in those days. Well, I was talking ...but there were few answers. So I basically hoarded a huge collection of glass bottles under my sink. Not sure what became of those bottles, it's likely my roommate issued an ultimatum to get rid of them. And then came the plastic bags ... the bane of humanity and the rest of our plastics hanging in our trees in the City. (I also have a certificate as a "green medicine" herbalist. During the Bush years, there was a concern the war-loving administration would take our supplements and access to medicinal plants and herbs. )

This is actually a post, for the Climate Strike! I'd say in SOLIDARITY but we're all in this TOGETHER. We have one BEAUTIFUL paradise of a planet. We're the stewards and we've done terribly.

Sharing a few photos from the 2014 "People's Climate March".  My #ClimatePact   "I swear in all my power to help this planet and its creatures thrive and return this planet to the PARADISE it is!  #ClimatePact   I will STOP abuses when I see them. I will STEP IN. Help find solutions.

 For my #ClimateStrike #ClimatePact I will:

*Ride my bike every day -- even through the snow. (so much fun!)

*Compost!

*Wear repurposed clothing! (eBay!)

* Mend and repair the things I have. (also kind of fun.)

* Plant trees.

* Return to being a vegan.   ~ While I had two vegan births, I'm now a vegetarian but also lactose intolerant. So, I must heed the warnings of my gut.  ;) My body is much smarter than I am.

(I'll return to add more to this list.)

What are a few things you've done that helped our planet, please share so we can do more!

Here are a few photos from 2014. New York City's People's Climate March, to rev you up for the rally at Foley Square tomorrow 12PM. No matter where you are if you can't attend a rally or march in your town -- start cleaning up! Walk around with signs. Post the photos on Social Media. Share anything you've done that helps clean up our environment and tag #ClimateStrike.

Don't forget the little guys that make a HUGE impact on our planet.

Families Belong Together! But NOT Incarcerated Together.

Once again, we marched.

Thousands upon thousands marched over the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC!

We march in over 800 cities worldwide for Families Belong Together because of the ZERO Tolerance policy the Trump Administration has implemented that separates children from their parents for misdemeanors, or for seeking asylum. I don’t watch the network news stations and prefer to read my journalism from various unbiased sources – and videos take too long to distribute information.

You can you see things in black and white when you read. There’s so much BS from this administration, and when I learned that corporate media wasn’t confronting Trump or the GOP, I was astounded. The gaslighting happening right now from this treasonous POTUS is gut-wrenching and so effing frustrating and it’s So BLATANT. How can the major news outlets NOT CONFRONT TRUMP? It’s their job.

We must also protect our journalists, and free speech, and the 1st amendment – all under attack. Trump is playing Putin. Everything he does is from the Putin playbook. Follow Sarah Kendzior author of The View From Flyover Country. She saw all of this coming!

I’ve written letters to the editor, to my representatives, I’ve called, marched, sat-in.
I won’t stop raising my voice, and we need MORE people to do this. Especially those with privilege! If we don’t protect the most vulnerable in this nation – who will? Those who have taken the helm of the U.S. government are hell-bent on destroying the gains we’ve marched for, stealing as much as they can. The Trump family is rife with con artists and absolute criminals. New Yorkers knew this. No one listened. I marched and spoke out during the Bush years. I will not rest. I’m not young, but I sure am fired up and energetic.

Thank you, Maxine Waters, (i love you!) for saying what more of our Reps need to say and they need to stand up and call out the treason, and the absurdity that a president under criminal investigation – could select our next Supreme Court Justice. Absolutely NOT! Especially since Justice Kennedy’s son, Justin may have supplied Trump the $1 Billion loan at Deutsche Bank, when no one else would. How many of Justice Kenny’s decisions over the last two years, including Gorsuch’s stolen seat, are illegitimate?
That’s what I want the news reporters to ask. The corruption is OFF THE CHARTS.
Here’s an overview from one of my favorite news columnists, also an attorney and professor, Seth Abramson. He’s helped save my sanity through all of this. (Follow him if you’re on Twitter @SethAbramson)

Seth’s breakdown:
“I have this terrible fear Mueller will wrap up his investigation and we'll discover that all Trump did is * launder hundreds of millions of dollars * accept hundreds of millions in bribes * conspire to blackmail the FBI into reopening Clinton's case * aid and abet Russian crimes. * committed 25+ acts of felony Obstruction * tampered with 10+ federal witnesses * conspired to offer pardons for silence * sold U.S. foreign policy for private gain * lied 3,000+ times to voters.
* knowingly hired Russian agents * instructed aides to illegally negotiate US policy * forced his son to issue a false statement about a felony * spent the campaign negotiating secret business deals with Russia. * knowingly hired Russian agents * instructed aides to illegally negotiate US policy * forced his son to issue a false statement about a felony * spent the campaign negotiating secret business deals with Russia. * lied repeatedly about releasing his tax returns * admitted to being a serial sexual assailant * never recused himself from his businesses as he promised us pre-election. * nearly tweeting us into nuclear war, claiming he averted it/deserved a Nobel Prize, only to have North Korea punk him like a schmuck * nearly crashing Earth's economy daily with policies he brain-farted on Twitter. * picking judges from someone else's list * knowing less about every issue than anyone in the room * changing his position on every issue * betraying his constituencies with policies he hid while campaigning. So you conservatives can only imagine the embarrassment and sense of being a silly snowflake we progressives feel daily at knowing that we know only 10% of what Robert Mueller does and yet having absolutely no basis to doubt this man's actions, judgment, or policies.”

No doubt there’ll be additions to this list before the day is through.

Stand UP. Call out Bigots. This POTUS is a racist and a horrendous person. Wouldn’t even drop the American Flag at half-mast to honor the journalists killed by his constant hate on the free press “the media” -- what a blanket statement, as in all media? Sounds like Putin, no? Vilify the media, have people mistrust their government – making them ripe for the pickings and for propaganda!

*Update: POTUS lowers the flag after pressure to do so.  (as I wrote this post!)

Call out the lies!  Call out the hate. LOVE WILL WIN.

Reality Check!

I haven’t posted much over the last couple months, drafting two new manuscripts, one’s a YA, and with a beta reader, the other a middle-grade I’ve started revising. Some days it feels like I’m running out of time.
Do you ever feel this way, as a writer?
I’m fortunate the years of wrestling for writing time finally produced. Maybe it’s my age, (the fear of death) the spinning of the Earth, or moving toward the galactic center, but I cannot write fast enough.

Or it could be I’m hiding in my writing to escape the world!
But it doesn’t last.
When the pages of my fictional world close, the world around me opens.

Today’s reality check was the Student Walk Out! I stand in solidarity!

My Response to “Diversity is not our Strength” tweet by Steve King (R-Iowa)

“It’s a small world after all … “ the song went as my boat ride passed children of all ethnicities, holding hands across the world at Walt Disney. It was Diversity. Inclusivity. Love.

It's a Small World Walt Disney

My mother, an immigrant from Greece, had become single by the time we moved to Florida. I was 8-years-old, my brother three years younger, and she had little help from anyone aside from friends. She taught belly dancing, and her friends from Syria, Turkey, or Lebanon turned our place into the United Nations. Memories of whirling dervishes, their laughter, and joy shared among these women, echoes in my heart and memory. They found each other in an otherwise isolated existence living in Central Florida and formed bonds to last years.

This was the early 80’s, my mother was tall and beautiful in a striking way. Exotic. She stuck out of every crowd. Her broken English I never noticed until someone pointed it out, or if I were away a while I’d hear it.

At 13-years-old, we moved to Key West after my mother married her friend, Kamal, from India, and we lived there for a time. Turned out Kamal was gay. (Long story there) I have fond memories of his sister’s Tandoori Chicken, unable to sleep, but the stomachache was well worth the indulgence.

While we lived in Key West, my mother met a Cuban man, and with the help of his son, translated the passions running between them. We moved to Miami and she learned to cook arroz con pollo and café con leche. I had a new family, five brothers and a stepsister, all born in Puerto Rico. I loved learning about their cool jobs, and wild adventures. I was 15 when my stepsister told us she was gay. My oldest stepbrother was also gay, the one who explained dreams and astronomy, and understood the abstract ideas I enjoyed talking about. The youngest of my stepbrothers lived with us. Close in age, we bonded over teasing and taunting, while forced to share a home for a year, before I left for college.

This is my America. Diversity is my America. In the melting pot of New York City, I’ve found a home., and now married with children to a Jewish man.

 Dear Steve King (R-Iowa)
I have no trouble calling out racists or bigots.

We have but faith: we cannot know;
For knowledge is of things we see
And yet we trust it comes from thee,
A beam in darkness: let it grow.
